CERT Training – New Bedford & Westport

The South Coast Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Collaborative comprised of the Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs) from the communities of Dartmouth, Freetown, New Bedford and Westport will be conducting two CERT training courses in our area beginning next month.  The first class to be held in New Bedford will start on Wednesday, May 2nd and the first to be held in Westport will start on Thursday, May 3rd.

The first class to be held in New Bedford will start on Wednesday 02 May and every Wednesday until the 27th of June. The New Bedford class will run from
18:30hrs.(6:30pm) to 21:30hrs.(9:30pm) and will be held at the Brooklawn Park Senior Center, 1997 Acushnet Ave. New Bedford. The second calls will be held at the Westport Fire Headquarters located at 54 Hix Bridge Road, Westport and will start on Thursday 03 May and will continue every Thursday evening from 18:30hrs. to 21:30hrs. through the 28th of June.
Participants must attend all sessions to be eligeble for a Certificate of Completion.

There is no cost for this training the CERT Classes are FREE!

CERT classes provides good basic training for anyone who is involved in Emergency Management. In addition CERT training is also recommended for any individual who is involved in Disaster response i.e. Medical Reserve Corp., ARES, RACES, SMART or Hospital Disaster Communications groups with an eye to possible field deployment.

GARS Technician Classes – August 2011

Genesis Amateur Radio Society (GARS) of Plymouth, MA in cooperation with Jordan Hospital, will be holding Amateur Radio Technician license classes and exam sessions.  The classes are broken up into 3 days and includes testing.

SEMARA Technician Classes Starting March 1st

Tony NN1D, Dave, W1DJG and Ben, N1WBV will be holding Technician classes starting on Tuesday March 1st at the Dartmouth Police Station Media Center. Classes are expected to run for four weeks from 7 to 9 PM with a VE session to be held soon after.

The class is currently limited to 20 students, so first come, first serve.

ARES Workshop 1/23 in Middleboro

There will be an Emergency Communications Workshop on Saturday January 23rd, 2010 from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM at the Eastern Bank Building (3rd Floor) on 1 South Main Street in Middleboro Massachusetts. This session is being put on by the ARES Section Staff through the efforts of South Shore Massachusetts ARES District Emergency Coordinator Phil McNamara, N1XTB, and Eastern Massachusetts ARES Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator, Carl Aveni, N1FY.

Emergency Communications Workshop in Boston

There will be an Emergency Communications Workshop on Saturday August 8th, 2009 from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM at the Boston Salvation Army Headquarters. This session is being put on by the ARES Section Staff through the efforts of Metro Boston ARES District Emergency Coordinator (DEC), Blake Haskell, K1BTH, and the cooperation of the Massachusetts Division of the Salvation Army through the efforts of Frank Murphy, N1DHW, leader of the Boston SATERN team. This Emergency Communications Workshop will provide the background and information to serve Amateur Radio Operators when they need to respond to a communications emergency or when supplemental communications via Amateur Radio is required. It will feature an Introduction and Conclusion to Emergency Communications, and five 1-hour training sessions on topics including:

  • NTS Traffic Message Handling
  • Basic Overview of ICS
  • Go Kits

The Boston SATERN Team will also give an overview of the SATERN/TSA agreement that was put in place a number of months ago.

This training will also feature a 1-hour lunch that will be provided at no coerced cost to any Amateur who attends the session. The presentations will be given by other Amateur Operators well versed in the topics listed above. The training will be a worthwhile endeavor not just for emergency communicators but for anyone who is an Amateur Radio Operator, and wants to learn more about the hobby. Preregistration is requested but is not required in case anyone would like to attend at the last minute. Please try to preregister by Monday August 3rd, 2009 to assure the meeting place is setup properly and we have enough refreshments for breaks between lectures and for the lunch break. We will, however, accept any last minute preregistrations after that day or any walk-ins as long as space permits.
