LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

FIELD DAY IN NYC

WiGYL's Field Day set up in New York City

“Hello Bob,

I operated Field Day in NYC along side of the West Side Highway at the west end of Houston St. I'm not in the picture as I was by myself.

This is my set-up at the multi-level parking garage and sports complex where I stay.

Had a great Field Day.

ABOUT THE QUONSET HUT

“I really hate to see it go. I was there the day it was moved into place. I was also there the days that W1AVY and W1KHV wired the place. Are there any good photos of the ole hut with the wooden tower and the prop-pitch motor on the tower? If so I would like to have one. I also hope someone has some good photos of the ole hut as it was years ago.

We had lots of great times in the ole hut.

73's, Art, W1FJI

“I can't say I knew W1AVY;but I do remember W1KHV, what a guy! I want to thank Art Marshall, W1FJI for introducing me to the club and the fond memories when Art would take me there to light the old pot bellied stove. I remember once when Art drove his Chevy Corvair right through a snow bank to get in the club parking area. I also remember Art and me one Field Day in front of the club in a leaky tent - no coffee and doughnuts back then. Thanks for the memories Art, like you I will hate to see the old hut go.

BUILDING PLANS

DAVE, K1JGV,
BUILDING/RENOVATION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

Everyone knows that I am a realist. After talking to some club officers and members, I see need for dropping back and reassessing where we are going.

The Board asked me to present a single plan. It is to be for a limited wooden addition. Yet I find myself doing this at precisely the time when the stability of our finances may be in question, not just with the tower contract, but pending an outcome of the recent oil spill.

This is how I plan to unfold what I, with the committee's consent, have in mind. I will present a modified plan building based upon the original $35,000 expenditure that has been discussed. The new plan will be for a slightly larger addition at increased cost, not to exceed $50,000. The boiler room will be relocated to the northwest area behind the meeting hall with space to allow for a furnace room and/or fuel tank. Under the prevailing situation, I will strongly encourage that we do not venture into an addition until spring.

It is obvious that we will need the furnace operational in the next two months. My view is that some sort of a temporary tank to feed the furnace be installed within the confines of the boiler room to get us through the winter. We cannot be assured that an addition will be completed before the cold weather with a functioning heating.

Moving the boiler room next year involves nothing for the moment. The Quonset hut is now gone. I feel that if we know what we want to do and all agree (well, most agree), we will do well. I will present this modified plan to the members at the August meeting for approval or disapproval and ask for an up or down vote on it. That will give us at least six months to get our affairs in order. With the oil spill to clean up, we cannot count on building anything until spring.

This is how I see it and I do not feel that I am alone on the issue. I am open for points of view, but think that we need to `drop back and punt` — take a nice deep breath and look at the facts. I will be there for the club and do not plan to go anywhere in the meantime.
