LETTER TO THE EDITOR
“Let me as an old member of the
club respond to some of your comments. Although I am
located in Florida, my interest in SEMARA, where the
club is going and what becomes of the club remains very
high.
For any club to survive it first must
have strong leadership, someone has to run the train.
It must have a plan of where it wants to go, goals to
reach for, and it must have members who are willing
to setup up and do things even if no one else is stepping
up. Without these basics any club will not go anywhere
but down hill. There will always be those who give 100%,
there are those who will give 50%, there are those who
will just go along for the ride, and there are those
who will complain about everything under the sun because
they think their way is the only right way - it's just
a fact of life.
Keeping the above in mind, there should
be no give-a-ways at the club. You should always put
something into the club to get something back from the
club. Free coffee, soda, donuts and anything else should
come to a halt. If the club is going to run events and
there are no dues, members must help cover the cost
of whatever event is being put on. With all-you-can-eat
for $5.00, I am sure the club is in the negative. With
regard to the Christmas party, if a member really wants
to attend, then he or she must support the cost, or
don't attend.
I myself would be happy to pay $20.00/year
dues as we have always done in the past. By the way,
I am in favor of reinstating the dues. Get past it and
move on. In other words, you don't get in without paying.
Amateur Radio and activity
- seems to be simple. The Sunday morning gab fest is
not a problem, it brings folks together and everyone
knows there will be someone at the club to chat with.
whether you agree with their ideas or not. You want
coffee, soda and donuts, bring them with you to the
club.
The Skywarn, RACES, ARES and other
events such as these are great. I remember seeing in
some of the past news letters about the QRP folks going
out and having some fun working QRP. I also see the
lighthouse activity is still going on, that's great.
"Can you contribute to the well-being
of the club?"
You get out of the club only what you
put into it. Here in the south the saying is , "walk
the walk, don't just talk the talk". Come on, get
involved, it's your club, and you are the club. Always
remember that this is a hobby and I might add a darn
good one. I have enjoyed Ham Radio now for only 52 years
and I intend on enjoying it for a heck of a long time.
Help the club, and help yourselves, see what you can
do when you work together. Have an idea, bring it up,
talk about it. Rumors are just that, find out the truth
rather than listening to worthless gossip. You have
nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you can't
find any activity you like, make your own, but don't
hurt the club or others in the process.
Well, I hope to work you folks on one
of the bands and one of the modes. I am on HF SSB, CW,
PSK31 on 20m - by the way, east coast to the west coast
on 25 to 30 watts and great copy, also into South America
and Europe with the same 25 to 30 watts. On 6 meters,
I'm always looking for DX, let me know and we can try
a sked somewhere.
I'll be looking for you on the air.
