This annual award is very much active, however we have not had any applicants since 2015’s winner. This means as of 2023, $4,000 has been forfeited! General Information
The SEMARA Scholarship is available to students living in Southeastern Massachusetts. Our objective is to promote amateur radio to young persons and the radio hobby in general. Scholarships are awarded annually in the Spring for the current academic year. Applicants should apply via US Mail during our application filing window of January 1st to March 1st.
To apply, three items are required:
- Signed original application
- 600-word essay about amateur radio
- Paper copies of all transcripts

Julie Knappik resides in Raynham, is a student at New Testament Christian School in Norton, MA and is a General class ham. She will be studying Engineering at UMass Amherst or Western New England University in the fall.

About Drew:
Drew Tinsdale resides in Dartmouth and is a student at Dartmouth High School. He is involved in many activities at his school, has an extensive resume and is interested in developing smartphone apps. Drew will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), majoring in interactive media and game design in the Computer Science department.

Kyle Everett

About Kyle:
Kyle Everett resides in Fairhaven and is a student at Fairhaven High School. Kyle had perfect attendance all 4 years of high school and ranked 6 out of 159 in his class with a 4.66 GPA. Kyle is a 12 season varsity athlete, is a member of the drama club and plays in the school jazz band, orchestra and marching band. Included in his application for the SEMARA Scholarship was a letter of recommendation from the Head Track and Field Coach. In addition to his SEMARA Scholarship, Kyle won the Abigail Adams and Greater Southeastern Massachusetts Labor Council scholarships. In the fall, Kyle will be studying Electrical, Electronics and Communicational Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI).

About Emma:
Emma J. Klinkhamer resides in Rehoboth, is a student at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School and has a long list of community services and extracurricular activities. She is a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the Falcons girls varsity basketball team, a member of the French club, a peer leader, a math and science tutor for elementary students and has received high honors for all four years of high school. She plans to attend UMass Amherst to study within the biochemical and biomedical engineering areas. She is also a licensed amateur radio operator following in the footsteps of her father.

About Amanda:
Amanda Mendes is a student at New Bedford High School and has a long list of community services and extracurricular activities. She is a member of the National Honor Society, ranked 30 in her class of 562 and has been accepted to the nursing program at UMass Dartmouth. Amanda is not licensed, however she was introduced to amateur radio by her grandfather, Angelo Mendes, D44BS who lives in Cape Verde.

About Melissa:
Melissa C. Wesember is a New Bedford High School student and a member of the Science Club, Swim Team, Key Club, Tennis Team, Vice President of the Medical Careers Club and President of the Spanish Club. Melissa has been on the Honor Roll twice, she does community service projects and will be attending Norwich University majoring in Engineering in the fall. Melissa is also interested in a military career.
