John G. Carreiro, W1ZYV

It is with deep regret we report the passing of longtime SEMARA member, John, W1ZYV.  John was 92 years old when he passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 11, 2022.  He was the beloved husband of Margaret M. (Protami) Carreiro who survived him.  Two of John’s adult children are also hams; Linda Enos, KA1QCO of Acushnet and Peter J. Carreiro, KA1WOJ of New Bedford.

John was born in New Bedford and served in the United States Army National Guard.  He was the owner of “National Business Supplies & Equipment Company” before retiring.  His first job was at C.E. Beckman in the radio department, later working for IBM as an engineer.  He also taught at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School in the early 1970s.

In addition to being a ham radio operator for 70 years, John had a talent and love for photography.  He played the clarinet, flute and piccolo, and was a member of the Dartmouth Community Band, playing in outdoor concerts throughout the summer.  He loved to travel and visited many of his favorite places more than once.  His favorite times however, were always spent at home and with his family.  He especially enjoyed sharing time with his five grandchildren.

It was always a pleasure to run into John at SEMARA, both in person and on the “double-oh” repeater.  It’s comforting to know he lived a long and fulfilling life.  He will certainly be missed and we send our condolences to his family.

Arrangements for John were private.  On November 1, 2022, the FCC assigned his former call sign to his daughter Linda, who obtained her dad’s call sign to honor him.  Further reading on John’s life is available on his Current Obituary page.  May he rest in peace.
